Currumbin Wildlife Hospital: Busy as ever

Despite the COVID crisis, 2020 is tracking to be the busiest year ever at the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital!

In the first six months of 2020, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital (CWH) saw 6,170 animals admitted (up from 5,281 over the same period in 2019). While the cooler months are traditionally seen as the “quiet period” at the Hospital, the team still attended to 596 patients admitted in June and 618 in July. Interestingly, possum patients have seen the largest increase in numbers. The three primary species seen at the Hospital include the Common Brushtail Possum (pictured below), the Common Ringtail Possum and the Short-eared Brushtail Possum. The main reasons for rescue include vehicle strikes, domestic animal attacks, exudative dermatitis and displacement. Given the primary diet of possums consists of flowers, buds, shoots and a variety of native plant species, the team (made of staff and volunteers) do a wonderful job in sourcing fresh browse daily for patients.

In the first six months of 2020, CWH saw 315 possums admitted (100 more than in 2019), and over June and July saw 131 possums (more than double the number seen over the same period in 2019). Though the team weren't just busy treating patients, senior Vet of Currumbin Wildlife Hospital; Dr Michael Pyne also held two major media events to celebrate the launch of Australia Post's Stamp Collecting Month in the hopes of reaching out to the next generation of vets and wildlife enthusiasts. Australia Post is encouraging young Australians to become passionate about Australian wildlife this August, with the Stamp Collecting Month theme ‘Wildlife Recovery’.
