How trams will change Gold Coast Hwy

With Transport Minister, Mark Bailey, confirming that consultation held in March showed support for the highway route; here is your update on the road ahead...literally.

There has been incredible discussion surrounding the role the Gold Coast Light Rail will play in boosting local trade and connecting the Northern Gold Coast to its Southern cousins. Whether you agree with that discussion or not, the question remains: What impact stage 4 will have on our already congested roads. Check out the below outline on what the road ahead should look like:

  • Gold Coast Highway will remain four lanes from Burleigh Heads to just south of Nineteenth Avenue in Palm Beach.
  • From Nineteenth Ave to just north of Palm Beach Ave, the Gold Coast Highway will change to become a two traffic lane boulevard.
  • The Highway would return to a four-lane traffic zone through the Palm Beach Ave area before reverting back to two lanes through to the Sarawak Ave intersection.
  • Traffic would return to four lanes through Palm Beach's most southern region and across Currumbin Creek. Trams would most likely run alone a purpose-built bridge.
  • Traffic would reduce to two lanes along the Highway through Currumbin before returning to four lanes which would continue through to Gold Coast Airport.
