Love Your Local

Shop, eat and drink from Broadbeach to Burleigh, spreading Christmas cheer to businesses

  • Shop Local and Win December prize pool boosted to $5,000
  • Gold Coast Highway lane closures being removed by 15 December
  • Only targeted Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 works until 3 January

Gold Coasters are being encouraged to “love their local” throughout the Christmas holidays – spreading some festive cheer to businesses along the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 alignment.

GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford said it was the perfect time for Gold Coasters to shop, eat, drink and stay along the alignment, as works ramped down from Broadbeach south to Burleigh.

“With lane closures being removed and works being paused, it is easier for people to get in and do their Christmas shopping and have end of year catch ups with friends and family,” he said.

“We are hoping this pause in works will encourage as many people as possible to support local businesses along this strip during this period."

“We have some of the city’s best hospitality venues and excellent retail stores and accommodation along the alignment.”

As an extra incentive, the prize pool of the competition associated with the Love Your Local campaign, Shop Local and Win, has been boosted to $5,000 in December. This follows increased prize pools from September to November, with the vouchers given away purchased from local businesses.

“This is a chance to thank Gold Coasters who support these local businesses during the Christmas holiday period,” Mr Mumford said.

“The increased prize pools from September to November helped to significantly boost the competition entries and we hope to see the same in December.”

Two lanes northbound have again been in place on the Gold Coast Highway, between Markeri Street and Surfers Avenue, since 20 November and the Heron Avenue and Markeri Street section northbound will have two lanes in place again by 15 December. Most Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 works are due to stop by 15 December and will not begin again until 3 January at the earliest.

Almost 9 kilometres of utilities have been delivered so far as part of the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project, with the upgrade and relocation of water, telecommunications, power, sewer and drainage. This work will future proof the city’s assets for years to come.

To facilitate this work, 21 active workfronts and 41 crews were in place towards the end of the year. The combined workforce and office staff measured about 600, with about 95 per cent living on the Gold Coast or nearby.
